British Dentist Convicted of £1.4m Fraud against the NHS

Birmingham dentist Joyce Trail has been convicted of defrauding the NHS out of £1.4m to fund a lavish lifestyle.

Dr Joyce trail was part of a fraud whereby claims were made against the deceased as well as triple claiming against the elderly involving 7000 claims backed up by false paperwork. She also used patient details unwittingly provided by care homes and made claims even though she had not met many of these patients.

Dr Joyce Trail enjoyed a lavish lifestyle buying Jimmy Choo shoes at over £400 a pair and taking expensive Carribean holidays.

Speaking after the verdict, Victoria Jones, a representative for West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service said Dr Trail’s victims were not only vulnerable patients, but also ordinary everyday taxpayers.

Dr Trail faces a substantial prison sentence when convicted later this month.

Eating during dental healing time

Eating during healing time

I have to apologise for not being very active recently. But with the Malev Hungarian Airlines leaving the skies forever, our customer service team was very busy advising and developing new ways so our dental patients from abroad can reach their Hungarian dentists even more easily.

Anyway, yesterday I couldn’t resist having a quick breakfast at my favourite Hungarian cafe, when I spotted an old friend. He was on his mobile talking in a very strange way. When he finished the conversation I went over to greet him. He was glad to see me and straight away started explaining his experience with his dentist.

My friend (let’s call him Robert) is a mayor of a nice, little Hungarian village, he has been for over 15 years now. His teeth were okay, nothing fancy, sometimes he needed the odd filling or root canal, but that was it. Till one day he looked in the mirror and noticed how the enamel of his teeth started disappearing and the colour turning into a darker shade of grey. Well, as his job involves lots of networking and sometimes press appearance he decided to pay a visit to his dentist and ask about his options. The dentist suggested bridges for him for all of his upper teeth, explaining the health and the aesthetic benefits. Most appealing was the possible result of looking even younger, as the new teeth would look a lot whiter and sparkler.

So Robert decided to go for it all. But he had no idea of how many changes this process will bring into his life. He said the dentist started the work on his teeth early January and only 4 weeks later will do the fitting of the new crowns. During the 4 weeks he has to wear temporary teeth… those will not protect from the feeling of cold or hot, so the increased sensitivity due to grinding is present all the time. And the function of those teeth is also very limited. This is only natural, but I asked him who his dentist was. I never heard of her though…. Also advised, next time when he needs a dentist in Hungary get in touch with me, as our dentists would’ve done the job within 5 working days, saving him a whole month of temporary discomfort!

Anyway, this little conversation given me the idea of advising on food. Dental patients travel abroad for all sorts of dental treatments. Yes, the savings are great; in most cases aftercare is also offered. I can only advise on Hungary, as I know its medical developments and believe it offers the best for the foreign dental patients. Normally, there is a healing period for every dental treatment. When receiving new dental crowns or bridges it can be anywhere from 3 days to 10 days. When getting dental implant the healing period can be as much as 9 months. Even receiving teeth whitening could bring in some new rules in our life in terms of what we should and should not eat and drink.

When receiving dental crowns during the healing time dental patients are wearing the temporary teeth (3-10 days) should avoid hot or cold food or drink. Room temperature is the best. Also in most cases chewing is not an option. Whilst staying in Hungary I would highly recommend engaging with the soup culture. Soup plays big part in a Hungarian’s diet, as it is the first in a usually 2 course lunch meal. You have the watery soups, options with meat or vegetables only, as starters. The most popular ones are: gulyas soup, Jokai bableves (a special bean soup), borsoleves (pea soup) and cernametelt soup (thin pasta soup). And they have the thick soup types; they call them “fozelek”, as a main course. English patients find this quite funny.

Once one said: “OK, so if I have soup as a starter and thick soup as main, I dread asking what the dessert is…”

Eating during dental healing time

Anyway, it might seem all baby food but great option for those, who still wish to sample some delicious Hungarian cooking that does not require chewing.
Most restaurants in Hungary offer “menu of the day”, usually 2-3 a la carte options for about £3 per person, but also you can find soups and “fozelek” (thick soup) on traditional Hungarian Restaurant’s menus.

Kim at the dentist

Kim Kardashian and her dentist

Reading about how celebs also go to the dentist makes them look like real people. In the end of the day a toothache is painful no matter what our status or financial backgrounds are.
She recently visited her dentist in California and tweeted “Let the numbing begin! I need a shot 🙁 I’m scared!”

http://celebrity-gossip.net/celebrities/hollywood/kim-kardashian-dental-filling-damsel-214532

Well, beauty comes at a price and celebs simply can not afford to neglect their teeth. Just remember poor Lindsey Lohan….
Kim Tweeted recently: “A day at the dentist is never fun! Well unless its with Dr. Kevin Sands! Love you doc but fillings suck. #HalfMyFaceIsNumb.”

So, knowing how much our celebs have to suffer to look and feel their best, we should stop feeling so sorry for ourselves and get on with that dental visit.
However, if patients wish to have the very same Hollywood smile only at a fraction of the price: look into travelling to Hungary for dental care! It will cost a lot less!

cheap dentist

Fake Dentist offering cheaper services gets suspended sentence

According to Dentistry IQ on-line magazine „Stephen Sickelmore, 52, posed as a qualified professional when he visited patients all over Devon and Cornwall and took impressions of their mouths.”

(see more here http://www.dentistryiq.com/index/display/news-display/1583593297.html)

The guy was a dental technician apprentice once, but his qualifications expired. This was the closest he ever got to being a professional. He advertised int eh Yellow Pages as „The Denture Clinic” and played vulnerable old dental patients out of their money in exchange of wonky dental sets.

„Many patients of his Denture Clinic were left with painful, ill-fitting dentures while others were embarrassed to be seen in public wearing them after teeth chipped or fell out.”- says the article and describes how he was operating in a highly unhygienic mess.

I can’t blame the patients. Many of them would look into cheaper alternative, as not all of them can afford to have fixed dentures or implant supported bridges. As the recession is still growing we all search for better value for money. But as the recession hits on many other countries it is worth considering travelling abroad for some cheap dental work and other services like, opticians, beauticians and hairdressers.

But before anybody would commit  should check out qualifications of the dentists and if they are registered by the General Dental Council in London.

Seven years ago, when Hungarian Dental Travel was established, some of our team members spent few months over in Hungary, spending long hours at the dentists’s surgery in Budapest, Mosonmagyarovar, Gyor,  Sopron, Heviz and around the  Lake Balaton inspecting our possible dental partners’ qualifications, experience, English language knowledge, even their dental technicians’ work to reduce risks for our patients and maintain high quality control. But even if you chose to use a dentist or any dental professional in your home country, make sure you check upon the qualifications.

saving money on dental trip

Make the most of your dental trip

Dutch dental patients expect the price of dental treatments to rise rapidly.

After the Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations many of us decided to commit to a resolution. Some of us will be thinking to finally sort our teeth out, but some of us will be put off by the costs of private dental treatments int he UK, US and many other European countries…

Those Dutch dental patients, who wish to have their teeth fixed will have to be disappointed, as fees are on a sharp rise- Dutch News reports
http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archives/2012/01/dentists_fees_rise_sharply.php
Hungary has been the most popular dental tourism destination int he last decade and the highly competitive prices will support its status for many years coming.

Especially now it is worth it, as the Hungarian Forint is suffering so badly on the International currency market. Patients travelling now will get a lot more out of their dental holiday, although the price of the dental treatments are fixed in GBP but as the additional costs, like restaurant costs, entertainment and shopping (optician, clothes, beauty treatments) will be a lot cheaper against the Euro and the GBP.

So if anybody wishes to take advantage of this currant situations, please e-mail chris@hungariandentaltravel.co.uk or call our new number 0207 193 1384 (in case the line is busy patients can leave message, we always call back)

teeth made in hungary

The difference when you see a dentist in Hungary

Dental tourism is still a growing craze in Britain. The recession and the difficulty of finding an affordable dentist driven thousands of dental patients away.

Hungary is one of the longest established dental destinations in the World. Most dental patients are from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Only in the last 7 years people in England and the USA discovered its value in dental tourism.  The specific infrastructure, the history, the technology and the dental education are all highly supporting this dental destination and making it stand out from other countries like Poland, Slovakia and Czech Republic.

Some Hungarian dental clinics are offering dental consultations in England. Not in every case patients meet with the actual dentist, who will be performing the treatments. What is very important for all dental patients is to understand fully the estimated treatment-and price plan.

Dentists in Hungary tend to forward think when it comes to treating patients from abroad. The quality of the treatments and also the type of treatments are being considered based on the fact that the dentist will wish to prevent post-operative complications and lower any potential risks as much as possible.

Few Hungarian clinics offer dental treatments in England, but as good as it sounds, this is not necessarily the best option for everybody. Taking time off work could be an issue, when most treatments need 5-10 working days to complete in Hungary. Having the treatment in England could be a good option, but actually this could also take longer to complete, as appointments are not always so frequent.

Also dental patients need to consider quality over their comfort when deciding on which dental clinic they would trust their teeth on…. Only few surgeries are available in England for treatments, but Hungary is full of highly qualified dental surgeons, not always carrying out intensive marketing, so dental patients might need to carry out a more detailed research to find them. The price of treatment is generally the driving force for those, looking for a dentist abroad, but not always the cheapest is the best nor the most expensive one. Taking years of expertise, qualifications, reputations and recommendations into account would help choosing the right dentist.

using dental x-ray for treatment plans

What dental x-rays can do…

When considering travelling to Hungary for dental treatments, some Hungarian dentists will offer an x-ray facility in the UK, so an approximate treatment-and price plan can be established. Seeing your estimated costs and getting familiar with possible treatment types will help you planning and putting your mind at ease.

Sometimes a full panoramic x-ray is not quite enough to see if you can have implants and a personal examination is needed or other diagnostic tools. But x-rays could pick up on those, who are in risk of fractures according to the article published in Private Health (http://www.privatehealth.co.uk/news/december-2011/dental-x-rays-risk-of-fractures-36299/).

New research from the Sahlgrenska Academy found that the bone structure of the lower jaw was associated with a person’s vulnerability to the breaks.

“We’ve seen that sparse bone structure in the lower jaw in mid-life is directly linked to the risk of fractures in other parts of the body, later in life,” stated Lauren Lissner, a researcher at the Institute of Medicine at the Sahlgrenska Academy.

Most of us are aware of the importance of regular dental check-ups, not only to spot potential oral problems, but also to prevent other health issues, like heart disease, diabetes and so on…. Using the x-ray scan is most often part of this procedure.

Reading the Daily Mail just few days ago I came across this article Grandfather stunned when dental X-ray shows pellet that was shot into his jaw when he was TEN
(Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2071175/Grandfather-stunned-dental-X-ray-shows-pellet-shot-jaw-TEN.html#ixzz1gJhEnUsc)

It is about a middle aged man, who went to the local hospital for a dental check-up and the x-ray showed a pallet he knew nothing about, only thinking it though he realised what could’ve happened.

Regular dental check-ups are very important to prevent further problems, but once you have them they need to be treated. Ignorance is the worst thing and painkillers will just disguise the real cause.

If you can not afford dental prices in your own country, look into alternative solutions. Travelling for dental treatments could be a good way of saving money. Please, check out our website on Hungarian Dental Travel- for more information.

You can find fairly big clinics in Hungary with all the latest equipments or small, more personal dental studios with only one or two dentists. The quality of dental work will not depend on the size of the surgery. Communication is also very important. Most dentists in Hungary speak perfect English and also many surgeries employ English speaking staff and customer relationship managers.
Dental treatment prices in Hungary can vary. Generally, it depends on the level of the dentist, as Senior dentists, with more experience charge more, but by using them you may reduce the risk of needing complex aftercare. Newly established dental surgeries also offer introductory prices and some offers promotional deals, especially if you are willing to recommend their work or participate in marketing research. Freddie Mercury Teeth

Remembering Freddie Mercury’s talent, smile and overbite

21/11/2011

A highly accomplished singer, song writer and artist, he was adored by many and remembered by even more.

An article in the Independent made me think about his life and achievements in a different way “The great pretender: Who dares wear Freddie Mercury’s crown?

It is the anniversary of Freddie Mercury’s death, who quietly passed away on the 24th of November 1991.

Well, they didn’t mean dental crown by that. However, it was a well-known fact how much Freddie hated his teeth.

Very much regretting not having correction at an early age as later on he feared a drastic correction would change his voice character and quality. His famous overbite made him very cautious, hence the trademark mustache.

“I don’t like the way my teeth protrude. Apart from that, I’m perfect.” – Freddie

Overbites are very common and most people were happy living with them, unless they caused functional problems. In the last 6-8 years dental patients became very cautious about the aesthetic side of it, wishing to have a more pleasing appearance.

Dentists in Hungary are experts of overbite correction and most of them would recommend several different ways of fixing it, most often extensive crown work is needed for the best results.

Most overbites are hereditary, but several other things can be the cause. One of the worst effects is TMJ Syndrome causing neck pain, jaw pain, sleeping problems and migraines.

croked teeth

Will the new craze “Yaeba Teeth” take over the World?

17/11/2011

I came across many strange dental requests in the last few years. We had ladies wanting permanent vampire fangs, fitting teeth jewellery shaped like somebody’s private parts and now the latest craze coming from Japan the “Yaeba Teeth”.

“Japanese women are now going crazy to get the ‘yaeba’ look, in which they have a crooked teeth and has additional canine teeth.
It is very popular in Tokyo and costs around  $390 at a Dental Salon Plaisir in Tokyo’s upmarket ginza.” (Read more http://fallenscoop.com/74533/are-yeaba-teeth-the-new-beauty-trend-in-japan)

The solution creates a child-like look not only to make a girl look generally younger, but also sexy.

The request was also getting popular in New York amongst models, celebrities and actresses. Lara Stone, Georgia Jagger, Jessica Heart and natural “yaeba teeth” wearer Kirsten Dunst are all proudly showing off their less than perfect smiles.

Well, it is debatable whether dentists should only allowed to perform dental treatments to aid function, like chewing or they should be free to oblige to provide such requirements.

In Hungary this question really divides the dental professionals.

Most Hungarian dentists follow strict code of conduct only providing patients with an aesthetically pleasing, functional solution and will refuse extreme dental makeovers.

So, before you fly out make sure how flexible your dentist is…. And call me old fashioned but I still think there is nothing more attractive than a beautiful, healthy and natural smile….
